A Brief Study of Culture shockfrom some episodes of Tom and Jerry

1. Introduction:

The aim of this thesis is analyze the emergence, influence and some

countermeasures of culture shock which is bad on some episodes of Tom

and Jerry.

Culture shock is a common phenomenon in our daily life. It occurs

when the new culture has different rules from our won and we can’t act

appropriately in new environment and others do not act as we expect them.

The usual word “shock” is a medical physiological respon, but culture

shock can produce both psychological and physiological effects. It is not a

simple cultural conflict and also a shock of simple pathology. Of cour,

whether the culture shock could be overcome in advance? Are there any

ways to overcome it when you have a culture shock? After having a brief

knowing about culture shock ,there are some question still need to be

resolved. Especially in China,a multi-ethnic country with the unbalanced

development of domestic region, national culture and economic. And the

cultural custom also has great difference. At the same time ,with the

modernization of the economic construction and the opening of the outside

world ,the interaction of the foreign culture is increasingly prominent. We

need understand and treat culture shock more correctly .

This thesis is compod of four chapters. Firstly, with the extraction of

Tom and Jerry,we make a easy understanding of the phenomenon of cultural

shock. And then know its production conditions. What’s more, recognize the

impact on the individual. Finally, make a positive respon for culture

shock.

2. Discussion

Culture shock is an experience a person may have when one live or

learn a non ethnic cultural environment. Under the cultural conflicts and

unadaption people would creep up a feeling of frustration, uneasiness,

uncertainty and so on. It does not refer to clinical pathological shock caud

by dia. It is also the personal disorientation a person may feel when

experiencing an unfamiliar way of life due to immigration or a visit to a new

country,a move between social environments, or simply transition to another

type of the word "shock" originally refers to the loss of important

functions of the human body, such as excessive loss of blood, respiratory

and circulatory failure. However, when a person who has lived in his own

culture for a long time suddenly comes to another completely different new

cultural environment, the phenomenon of cultural shock often occurs for a

period of time. In the cartoon, there are a great number of phenomenon

show when you expo yourlf in a new cultural background, you would

feel jiaolu first. That’s why when the three little cats came to Tom’s

hou,they were frightened and frustrated.

If you get unhappy, confud and upt when you are traveling or

planing to abroad to study even to immigrate, you would have been

experiencing the culture shock. The psychological reactions could cau

some physiological dysfunction involving mass discharges of the

sympathetic nervous system, impairment of the functioning of the immune

system, and increas susceptibility to all dias. In the sixty-fifth episode

of Tom and Jerry,which named the mou of Manhattan. It could be found

that Jerry is a rural mou who was come form countryside and wanted to

travel the modern city far away. However, the high building and the busy

traffic system made him nervous, anxious, even fear. He had to drill into a

wer to avoid the new environment. The dark and damp around him

enhanced his psychological feeling, and his heart began to thump fast the

sweat had sprung out all over his body. After he hardly adjusted his state,

and put on the gentleman's hat which was thought the city symbolize by

himlf, again there was a more trouble to face him. The beautiful lady he

met on the white table was just a doll, but he emed to fall in love with the

little thing that would say a fixed greeting, but no life at all.

The psychological reactions and physiological symptoms of cultural

shock are slowly debilitating, sick and even "shock." So we need to find

some ways to prevent cultural shock. At the same time, do some rearch

about how to actively deal with the impact of cultural shock if it happened

on us. When we know in advance where we are going to live in for some

time with a different cultural environment, the first thing is to understand the

other person's culture. The library or the travel guide is a good choice. If

someone should in the new context for a longer time, they should take

some special lessons of the local customs and other relevant cours. Talk

with tho who had gone to study and live in this same cultural environment,

and ask for some experiences. In short, as much as possible prepared what

you feel completely before departure. For example, in order to fly to the

south, ducklings, the character of Tom and Jerry, had read a lot of

newspapers and books, did a lot of test flights, and even made some

simulation scenes, which were all very good preparations. But even if you

are ready to do it, you may be attacked by a culture shock. Becau we grow

up in our own cultural environment, if our religious beliefs, values, lifestyle

in the foreign cultural environment, it is easy to feel uncomfortable. The

reasons for Geographical surrounding, people's habits, the contrast of lively

and cold ,and including the convenience of life, public facilities, road

construction will make people have a strong n of adaptation. As the

mou Jerry went to Manhattan,with the art of sculptures en everywhere,

everywhere would hit roadblock which unlike the country grassland plains.

He came into one of the doors or hous, there was no longer the familiar

Tom and duckling, but some very different man.

After understand the manifestation and caus of culture shock, we can

find some countermeasures.

1. The lost of personal identify from national cultural environment. The

first thing to realize any vital cultural transformation could produce stress

and anxiety is huge, but the pressure and anxiety is a normal social

adaptability. This require not only a person's lf-esteem, sincerity and

confidence, but also the need to keep a good lf-image and rebuild the

personal and cultural needs. Although we could not stop the occurrence of

"culture shock", but at least we could reduced the pressure. In a n, this is

regarded as a new cultural experience and psychological feelings.

2. If the values produce contradictions and conflicts, we should be

aware that the values of the differences is often the potential, it is not easy to

detect, but it is an insurmountable obstacle. Intercultural communication

generally do not advocate completely or completely according to the

localization of exotic native customs act. Only as far as possible understand

each other in a communication, as consistent as possible in terms of

understanding and dealing with the problem. In order to achieve better

cooperation with each other.

3. If the way of life and habits are uncomfortable, it is more simple to

solve. As time goes by, people would gradually adapt. And. With the

globalization of economy and the increasing convenience of transportation,

people have found that in almost any corner of the world, we can also eat,

dress, live in the way we like.

It can be en from the analysis that the origin of culture shock is

rooted in the deep original cultural pattern. When a person faces the new

cultural form, it would surely produce cultural shock, if he or she judge the

new culture with his or her own cultural action and rules. Moreover the

social environment show a huge different from each other. As a deep and

wide reflection and supporting of culture, social environment add greatly to

the stress. Becau culture can be learned but social environment can’t be

copied .

Of cour, culture shock is not a dia, but a process of learning. It is

a complicated personal experience. Although it might produce some

uncomfortable and even painful feeling, but it is not in the same way

influence all the people, even for the same person also has a different effect

on in different periods of the same environment. Therefore, for tho who

would be or have been in different cultures in the area of people, since the

social environment is the individual can’t change, you should learn the

culture of lf adjustment.
