What Are Your Thoughts about Multiculturalism

in the Modern World in the Chine Context

Nowadays, we call the earth global village. It is available for different cultures

communicate with each other. Multiculturalism comes into our view gradually. But in

my opinion, in China 2011, the development of multiculturalism is still at a primary

stage. If the term multiculturalism is a flower, its development in China is just in the

process of pollination. Maybe it is offensive to say like this, we may as well t

Christmas as an example to explain it.

With Chine “open and reform” policy, Christmas has come into China.

However, Chine people just learn the superficial custom. We go shopping as well,

becau the discount for all goods. Christmas trees cannot be appreciated in every

single family but in a few enterpris and public institutions. No Santa Clau at all.

Thus it is not a festival for children as western countries.

But, one thing is as same as theirs that we nd gifts, too. It is not for a good

relationship between families and friends, Chine people do this for other special

reasons. Students in junior or nior high school give apples to friends for the

meaning of “safe”. It is an excellent way to relea learning pressure, challenge

teachers’ authority and show off how much money he or she has. After all, the price of

apple is two times as usual.

Actually, Chine people who have interest in Christmas are mostly under 35

year old, almost young people. Lovers love this foreign festival best. They spend it

just like Valentine’s Day. For bachelors, it is a time to feel depresd reasonably and

indulge themlves drinking and entertaining. In fact, Chine people spend

Christmas only one night in December 25th.

So we say Chine people not so much spend Christmas as go under Christmas

name to give a chance for the young to entertain, for the lovers to be romantic, for the

businessmen to make a lot of money. It is totally different from the western’s religious

festival. In the west, Christmas is a time for families to get together and enjoy the

peaceful atmosphere happily.

For Christmas, Chine people learn the outside custom and unconsciously add

a few elements we prefer, thus change the esntial religious meaning. For the

multiculturalism in china now, it still has a long way to go for Chine people really

understand the western culture absolutely.
