Let's do some sleep math. You lost two hours of sleep every night last week becau of a big project due on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, you slept in, getting four extra hours. On Monday morning, you were feeling so bright-eyed, and you only had one cup of coffee, instead of your usual two.But don't be cheated by your energy: You're still carrying around a heavy load of sleepiness, or what experts call "sleep debt"—in this ca something like six hours, almost a full night’s sleep. Sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep you should be getting and the amount you actually get. It's a deficit (缺乏) that grows every time we skim some extra minutes off our nightly sleep."People accumulate sleep debt gradually without being noticed," says psychiatrist William Dement, founder of the Stanford University Sleep Clinic.Studies show that such short-term lack of sleep leads to a foggy brain, worned vision, and trouble remembering.Long-term effects include obesity, insulin (胰島素) resistance, and heart dia.A survey by the National sleep Foundation reports that we’re losing one hour of sleep each night—— more that two full weeks of sleep each year. Para.4:The good news is that, like all debt, with some work, sleep debt can be repaid償 還.Adding an extra hour or two of sleep a night is the way to catch up.For the long-term lack of sleep, take it easy for a few months to get back into a natural sleep pattern. Go to bed when you are tired, and allow your body to wake you in the morning ( no alarm clock allowed). You may find yourlf catatonic (有緊張感的) in the beginning of the recovery cycle 恢復(fù)周期: Expect to have ten hours’ shut-eye(sleep) per night. As the days pass, however, the amount of sleeping time will gradually decrea. So earn back that lost sleep—and follow the orders of your inner sleep needs, and you’ll feel better."When you put away sleep debt, you become superhuman," says Stanford's Dement, talking about the improved mental and physical capabilities that come with being well rested. 1.The example of sleep math is ud to illustrate(以圖說(shuō)明) _____.(引出并略微解釋了sleep debt這個(gè)話(huà)題) A.in what ca you build up(積 累)a sleep diet. This means that the plant has changed something in its “body” or “habits” to make it easier to survive in difficult conditions. There are veral conditions they have had to adapt to. First, the soil of the forest floor is shallow. Also, the soil of the rainforest is not very rich, or easy to grow in. Next is the problem of very heavy rain which continues over a large part of the year. Finally, many plants of the rainforest are food for animals that live there. The biggest problem that rainforest plants have to adapt to is the lack of sunlight in the rainforest’s lower levels. Plants have adapted to this problem in veral ways. Many plants have very large leaves. The large leaf is helpful becau it has a bigger surface area. The bigger surface area a leaf has, the more sunlight it can absorb. The canopy trees adapt by growing to be 100 feet tall so that their leaves can grab all available sunlight. Other plants called lianas (climbing woody vines) have adapted by rooting themlves in the soil of the forest floor and growing up(介) the trees until they reach the canopy layer. Still other plants, such as epiphytes, have adapted by growing directly on the trees’ trunks and branches in the canopy and understory layers底層 of the rainforest. An adaptation to the large amounts of rainfall that many rainforest plants have is called “drip tips”. Their leaves are tapered (逐漸變細(xì)) to a sharp point at the end. This allows water to run off the leaf quickly. There are many other adaptations that rainforest plants have made to their environment. The will be discusd in detail, as we investigate the plants of the rainforest! 1. Which of the following is a difficulty that the rainforest plants have to face? A. Changes in their “body” or “habits”. B. Soil that is not very deep(1段4行). C. Epiphytes that grow on trees’ trunks. D. The worning of the natural environment. 2. A. the take-in of sunlight B. the large amounts of rainfall C. the leaves’ having a sharp point at the end(3段2行) D. water’s running off the leaves quickly 4. What can be inferred about rainforest plants? A. They have to face dangers not only from animals but also from each other.(沒(méi)有提到) B. Too little sunlight and too much water are the biggest problems they face.(明顯事實(shí)) C. Different kinds of plants have different ways to absorb sunlight.(2段2行) D.
