Chapter1: 第一幕

（旁白）One day, two old brothers, chatting along, happened to get to wondering what might

be the fate of a perfectly honest and intelligent stranger who should be turned adrift in

London without a friend, and with no money but that million-pound bank-note, and no way

to account for his being in posssion of it. The brothers had been having a pretty hot

argument a couple of days before, and had ended by agreeing to decide it by a bet, which is

the English way of ttling everything. Just then Henry came along.

Henry: (I was so hungry.)(狼狽樣）

Brother A: Young man, come here, plea. （竊喜）

Brother B: Could I ask you some questions?（竊喜）

Henry: Of cour, sir.

Brother A: What do you do?（焦急）

Henry: I’m a mining-broker's clerk in San Francisco.

Brother B: Why are you staying here?

Henry: My time was my own after the afternoon board. One day I ventured too far, and was

carried out to a. Just at nightfall, when hope was about gone, I was picked up by a small

brig which was bound for London. And now, I have nothing in my pocket.（可憐兮兮）

Brother A: Great! （驚喜）

Henry: Great? I can’t understand you, sir. （疑惑）

Brother B: I’m sure you will understand very soon. Here is an envelope（信封）.（神秘）

Henry: what’s this? (說著，我就要打開)

Brother B: no, no, no, there is some money, but you wouldn’t open it until 2:00pm.

（這期間，倆兄弟邊交談邊吃紙袋里的零食，Henry不斷瞟著這些美味，實在忍不住了，）

Henry: Could I have some?

Brother A: Of cour. oh, sorry. It’s empty.（他在袋子里吹了口氣，然后砸爛。— 確實空了。）This way, plea.

Chapter2: 第二幕

（旁白） Henry came into the nearest cheap eating hou.

（我進了一家飯店。沒人答理我，Henry隨便找了張桌子坐下）

Waiter: This at. (Henry只好換了張桌子。)

Waiter: What would you like?

Henry: Two big bowls of beef noodles, and a big cup of beer.(Henry很快吃完了，問另一位顧客：)

Henry: Excu me, what’ s the time ,plea?

Customer: 1:00

Henry: Waiter, plea give me another cup of beer, a bowl of beef noodles.

Waiter: Here is your bill.

Henry: Yes, sir. But what time is it?

Waiter: 1:45. what’ up?

Henry: Just wait a minute. (Henry磨蹭了一會兒， 估計時間到了， 掏出信封。只掃了一眼，就差點昏倒， 我盯著那張大鈔頭暈眼花，想必足足過了一分鐘才清醒過來。這時候，首先映入我眼簾的是小吃店老板。他的目光粘在大鈔上，像五雷轟頂一般)

旁白：Henry reached the note towards him, and said, carelessly:

Henry: "Give me the change, plea."

"I am sorry if it is an inconvenience, but I must insist. Plea change it; I haven't

anything el."(他心里想看，一個勁地打量那張大票；好像怎么看也飽不了眼福，可就是戰(zhàn)戰(zhàn)兢兢地不敢碰它.)

Boss: It isn't any matter; I’m quite willing to let the trifle stand over till another time

Henry: I may not be in your neighborhood again for a good while.

Boss: It was of no conquence, I can wait. I trust as rich a gentleman as you.

Chapter3

( 旁白 )I Henry was tramping the streets again. The sight of a tailor-shop gave him a

sharp longing to shed his rags, and to clothe himlf decently once more.

Henry: “If you have a misfit suit that have been thrown on their hands.”

我問的伙計沒搭理我，只是朝另一個點點頭。我向他點頭示意的伙計走過去，那一個也不說話，又朝第三個人點點頭，我朝第三個走過去， he said:

"Tend to you prently."

我等著。他忙完了手頭的事，把我?guī)У胶竺娴囊粋€房間，在一摞退貨當(dāng)中翻了一通，給我挑出一套最寒酸的來。我換上了這套衣服。這衣服不合身，毫無魅力可言，可它總是新的，而我正急著要衣服穿呢；沒什么可挑剔的，我遲遲疑疑地說：

"It would be an accommodation to me if you could wait some days for the money. I haven't

any small change about me."

那店員端出一副刻薄至極的嘴臉說：

"Oh, you haven't? Well, of cour, I didn't expect it. I'd only expect gentlemen like you to

carry large change."

I was nettled(惱火的), and said:

"My friend, you shouldn't judge a stranger always by the clothes he wears. I am quite

able to pay for this suit; I simply didn't wish to put you to the trouble of changing a large

note."

他稍稍收斂了一點，可那種口氣還是暴露無遺：

" we couldn't change your note ?On the contrary, we can."

I handed the note to him, and said:

"Oh, very well; I apologize."

他笑著接了過去，可是，只瞟了一眼鈔票，他的笑容就凝固了，臉色大變。我從來沒見過誰的笑臉定格成如此這般的永恒狀態(tài)。這家伙站在那兒捏著鈔票，用這副架勢定定地瞅。老板過來看到底出了什么事，他神采奕奕地發(fā)問： “

"Well, what's up? What's the trouble? What's wanting?"

I said: "There isn't any trouble. I'm waiting for my change."

"Come, come; get him his change, Tod; get him his change."

Tod retorted: "Get him his change! It's easy to say, sir; but look at the bill yourlf."

那老板看了一眼，低低地吹了一聲動聽的口哨，一頭扎進那摞退貨的衣服里亂翻起

來。一邊翻，一邊不停嘮叨，好像是自言自語：

"Sell an eccentric millionaire such an unspeakable suit as that! Tod's a fool—a born fool.

Always doing something like this. Drives every millionaire away from this place, becau

he can't tell a millionaire from a tramp, and never could. Ah, here's the thing I am after.

trours all right, they fit you to a charm, sir; now the waistcoat; aha, right again! now the

coat—lord! Look at that, now! Perfect—the whole thing! I never saw such a triumph in all

my experience."

I expresd my satisfaction.

"Quite right, sir, quite right; it'll do for a makeshift, I'm bound to say. But wait till you e

what we'll get up for you on your own measure. Come, Tod, book and pen; get at it. Length

of leg, 32"—“

. When I got a chance I said:

"But, my dear sir, I can't give the orders, unless you can wait indefinitely, or change

the bill."

"Indefinitely! It's a weak word, sir, a weak word. Eternally—that's the word, sir. Tod,

rush the things through, and nd them to the gentleman's address without any waste of

time. Let the minor customers wait. Set down the gentleman's address and—"

"I'm changing my quarters. I will drop in and leave the new address."

"Quite right, sir, quite right. One moment—let me show you out, sir. There—good day,

sir, good day."

Chapter4

( 旁白 ) One month later, a waitress played a joke on Henry, she hid the million pound

note. Then the news that Henry didn’t have a million pound note was spoken one by one, and

it was also reported in the newspaper.

于是， 眾人都聚在一起向他要賬。

故事梗概

故事發(fā)生在20世紀(jì)初的英國。一對富豪兄弟用一張面值百萬英鎊的現(xiàn)鈔打賭，看這張鈔票究竟會給人帶來無盡的財富還是只是一張一文不值的“小紙片”。

很快，從美國來的亞當(dāng)進入了富豪兄弟的視線。這個人的船在海上觸礁沉沒，他靠給其他船只做工來抵押船票才到了英國。現(xiàn)在他身無分文、饑餓難忍，這樣一個窮人是再適合不過的人選了。于是亞當(dāng)被請進了富豪家中。

富豪兄弟給了亞當(dāng)百萬鈔票，并和他約定在一個月的時間里，亞當(dāng)可以任意使用。但一個月后他必須把鈔票原樣不動地還給富豪，這樣他可以得到富豪們?yōu)樗峁┑娜魏我环菟霃氖碌墓ぷ鳌啴?dāng)糊里糊涂地接受了約定。

亞當(dāng)無論去吃飯、購買服裝都會因衣衫襤褸遭到人們的白眼。但當(dāng)他拿出這張鈔票時，人們不但向他大獻殷勤，甚至連相關(guān)的費用都可以減免，因為在他們看來亞當(dāng)是富豪，而且根本沒有人可以給一張百萬面值的鈔票找零。

很快報紙上刊登出美國一位有著著裝怪癖的百萬富翁光臨英國的消息，一時間亞當(dāng)成為上流社會的焦點，無論是公爵、富商都以和亞當(dāng)交際為榮，年輕姑娘們更是為了吸引亞當(dāng)?shù)淖⒁舛舜碎g爭風(fēng)吃醋，亞當(dāng)成為英國盡人皆知的人物。

但很快亞當(dāng)陷入困境中。先是他欠下的債越來越多，之后飯店服務(wù)員和他開玩笑，將百萬鈔票藏了起來，瞬間股市大跌，人們相傳亞當(dāng)是騙子，要債的人擠滿了整個飯店……

好在一個月的期限終于到了，亞當(dāng)如釋重負(fù)地將鈔票還給了富豪兄弟。但亞當(dāng)并沒有接受他們?yōu)樗才殴ぷ鳎驗榻?jīng)歷了大起大落，亞當(dāng)早已厭倦了人們對金錢的追逐。盡管失去了金錢，但他卻得到了許多。

經(jīng)典影評

NO1.故事從一張“好看的、精致的、獨一無二的小紙片”開始，它是一張小紙片，可它也是一百萬英鎊；它是一個天文數(shù)字的貨幣符號，可它也就是一張小紙片而已（從這個意義上，篇名也可以叫做“一張小紙片”或者“一張小紙片引發(fā)的XX”）。

這張小紙片，它比其他小紙片更為不幸的是它承載了當(dāng)時英國社會一百萬英鎊的價值，是的，它印制精美，可背負(fù)太多，這就注定了它飽經(jīng)滄桑的命運（我們還記得，一個月后Adams歸還小紙片的時候，它在幾經(jīng)折磨下已經(jīng)殘破了不少；當(dāng)然你可以說其他進入流通領(lǐng)域的小紙片比它更加殘破，可它們本來身價就不同啊）。但它比其他小紙片幸運的是它被轉(zhuǎn)到了Henry Adams手中，因此而見識了人類社會的各種善、各種惡、各種美、各種丑、各種悲喜劇。

如果只是有一張小紙片，它上面印著再多的“0”也沒有這么精彩的故事，追根溯源，是兩位英國紳士拿它打了一個賭。賭什么呢，賭一位剛到英國的、身無分文的外地人拿著它，在不兌現(xiàn)的情況下能否在英國體面地生活一個月。然后，他們在露臺上觀察來來往往的行人，最終選定了Henry

Adams，我們的主人公，一個意外來到英國的美國人，此刻他是身無分文的，正餓著肚子準(zhǔn)備撿起有錢人家小女孩隨手扔在地上的一個蘋果，可礙于體面（或某種尊嚴(yán)），彎了好幾次腰都沒撿起來。

兩兄弟鎖定了他，并且在經(jīng)過幾句簡單交談后，認(rèn)定他就是他們要找的人，他符合他們提出的所有要求：誠實、聰明、剛到倫敦、窮困潦倒。這里有趣的是他們倆玩了一個英國式的幽默，他們并沒有從一開始就跟Adams直接點破，而是交給他一個信封，附有幾行字和那張一百萬英鎊的小紙片，然后囑托他“一定要在兩點鐘打開”。（當(dāng)然他們稍稍提了一句信封里面有錢）

兩個奇怪的陌生人交給你一個奇怪的信封，你能忍住好奇心在一個多小時之后才打開它嗎（在沒有人監(jiān)督的情況下）？反正Henry做到了，或者說幾乎做到了，他甚至點了兩份同樣的食物以拖延時間，嗯，第一份吃了半小時，第二份也應(yīng)該差不多吧，可惜第二份吃得快了一點兒，還沒到兩點鐘，但是老板已經(jīng)走到跟前強令他付款了。實在找不到拖延付款的理由了，Henry只好把信封打開，小紙片露了出來，成功地嚇到了眾人。不過Henry的驚愕里更多的是疑惑和不解，所以他的表情看上去倒是挺平靜的，包括他馬上很無辜地說：“非常抱歉，可是…我確實沒有零錢”，這個場景真是爆笑。
