Associate Professor Naj Aziz

Honorary Principal Fellow

PhD-University of Wales, UK

Naj has over 35 years working and

rearch experience in the mining

industry.

Current rearch interest is mine

gas drainage and outburst control,

ground control and rock bolting,

mine safety with emphasis on dust control and rock cutting.

Naj has supervid more that 20 postgraduate thes &

publishes extensive web resources on mining engineering

including mine gas outburst and has more than 200

publications to his credit.

He is a regular reviewer of the highly ranked journal papers and

is a member of the organizing committee of the International

Ground Control Conference, held annually in WV, USA. Naj is the

chairman and editor of the proceedings of the annually held

Australasian Coal Operators’ Conference.

Mining Engineering at University of Wollongong (UOW)

is a major rearch provider to the Australian minerals

industry. Academics are actively engaged in a number

of fundamental and applied rearch projects externally

funded and industry sponsored projects in various areas

of mining engineering.

Objectives:

?To be an international rearch provider to the

minerals industry

?To support mining industry with established experti

in mine safety, ground control and mine design.

Current Rearch Projects include:

?Mine Safety

The areas of coal gas migration mechanism,

underground mine dust control, dust suppression

technologies, coal mine outburst control and prediction.

?Mining Geotechnical Engineering and Ground Control

Focus on strata reinforcement, rock bolting, numerical

modelling and mine subsidence prediction.

?Computer Applications and Operations Rearch

Dr Ting Xiang Ren

Senior Lecturer

PhD-University of Nottingham.

UK

Ting has over 20 years of work and

rearch experience in coal mining

and safety.

He is an expert in mine gas drainage, coal am gas and dust

control in long-walls. Ting has worked on many projects in

China and is well connected with Chine Mining Universities

and industry. He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) registered with

the UK Engineering Council and a member of the Institute of

Materials, Minerals and Mining. Ting is currently a guest

professor for China University and Mining Technology (CUMT).

Methodologies

Active program in system approach to mine productivity

improvements. Current work being conducted focus

on discrete simulation modelling, computational fluid

dynamics (CFD) and numerical modelling of ground

movement.

Industry collaboration

The current rearch collaborators include Australia

Coal Association Rearch Program (ACARP), CSIRO,

BHP Billiton, Minova Australia and Nuplex

International.

PhD Candidate in Mining

Engineering,

As the first PhD candidate of

Mining Engineering coming from

China University of Mining and

Technology (CUMT) in the

history of UOW and the first

undergraduate student who was awarded the China

Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarship in the history

of CUMT, I have the chance to study in this magical

place University of Wollongong, Australia.

My rearch topic is Coal Sorption Characteristics

in Various Environmental Situations.

Australia has the best worldwide reputation and

strength in mining industry and my focus is exactly

Mining Engineering, that is why I cho UOW.

Supervisors here are very knowledgeable at the

mining and safety, the support staff are well skilled,

students are friendly and everyone of them can

achieve their potential here.

University of Wollongong, is among the most

famous universities in Australia especially in the

teaching, rearching, besides the fabulous library,

well equipped laboratories and workshops the

university also provides interesting clubs and many

activities for international students such as English

conversation group, morning tea and trips to Blue

Mountains.

Australia is famous for its beautiful environment

and friendly people. University of Wollongong is a

coastal city Wollongong where I can enjoy the nice

weather, beautiful a and lovely beach, it is just

perfect environment. I enjoy the study and life

here, it is really a fantastic experience.

Dr Jan Nemcik ..has had an active career in geotechnical rearch for more than 20 years, including Industrial &

rearch work for the Australian Coal Industry Rearch Laboratories (ACIRL), Commonwealth Scientific Industry Rearch

Organisation (CSIRO), Department of Mineral Industries Western Australia, Strata Control Technology (SCT) Operations Pty

Ltd covering a wide array of mining & geotechnical applications from numerical simulations to field investigations. Jan’s

primary field of rearch is rock mechanics & strata control in coal mining.

Associate Professor Ernest Yaw Baafi

Director of the Mining Rearch Group has been associated with mining for 30 years. Primarily rearching the application

of computers & operations rearch methodologies to system evaluation & design. Current activities include geostatistical

ore rerve estimation, ore-body modelling and mine system simulation and optimisation.

Associate Professor Ian Porter

Has been associated with mining for 30 years. His main are of rearch is strata control in underground coal mining.

Current major rearch projects (curing $3M in Australian competitive grant), is in the development of a thin spray on

liner to replace steel mesh in coalmine roof reinforcement. Other areas of interest are in modelling coal mine operations to

facilitate performance improvement
