翻譯題目

中國(guó)人每天都在使用筷子(chopsticks)，這在很多外酬友眼里似乎是一個(gè)奇跡。歷史記載表明筷子的使用已有3000年的歷史。在古代，富人用金子制成筷子以顯示其富有。筷子還有其他功能，比如過(guò)去人們用銀制的筷子檢查他們的食物是否被人投了毒。現(xiàn)在，很多外國(guó)朋友在訪問(wèn)中國(guó)的時(shí)候都使用筷子。據(jù)說(shuō)，尼克松(Nixon)總統(tǒng)到中國(guó)訪問(wèn)時(shí)，在歡迎宴會(huì)上也使用了筷子。

表達(dá)難點(diǎn)

1.第1句后半句的“這”指代前半句的內(nèi)容，故后半句可處理成which引導(dǎo)的非限制性定語(yǔ)從句。

2.第2句中的“筷子的使用已有3000年的歷史”可譯為the u

of chopsticks has a history of years.不過(guò)前面的“歷史記載”譯為historical record，英語(yǔ)的表達(dá)習(xí)慣忌諱重復(fù)用詞，而historical是history 的派生詞，故換種說(shuō)法，譯為dates back to

three thousand yeare age.

3.第3句中的“以顯所其富有”可用不定式短語(yǔ)to display

their wealth表達(dá)，作目的狀語(yǔ)，比they were rich表達(dá)更簡(jiǎn)潔些。

4.最后一句的主要結(jié)構(gòu)為“尼克松總統(tǒng)也使用了筷子”，時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)“到中國(guó)訪問(wèn)時(shí)”和地點(diǎn)狀語(yǔ)“在歡迎宴會(huì)上”后置。而在英語(yǔ)的表達(dá)習(xí)慣中，時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)常位于地點(diǎn)狀語(yǔ)后，故譯為at the welcoming

banquet when he visited China.
