Facing with choices

As we all know, everyone has to make choices in life, whether it is about

choosing a beautiful dress or finding a satisfying job. While some decisions are

easy to make, others are tough calls and would put us in a dilemma.

In order to make a decision that we will not regret, we should bear the two

principles in mind: thinking before acting, and never missing any opportunities

that ari. On the one hand, we should have an apparent, objective judgment

about ourlves while maintaining a clear idea about the world around us. On

the other hand, we should also realize that every individual is different, and one

must take the factors of one's personal life into consideration. In addition,

opportunity is hard-earned; we should take advantage of it just like the proverb

states: "Opportunities are only for the prepared minds."

In my opinion, people must be both realistic and lf-aware. Once a decision

is made, we should riously accept and pursue the path one has chon, and

strive towards the realization of one's goal with perverance. Meanwhile,

always remember that taking advantage of good opportunities will pave the way

to success.

Is Becoming Rich the Only Goal of Life?

As the saying goes, "Money makes the mare go." Living in the contemporary

society, more and more people are becoming money-oriented whether

voluntarily or reluctantly. Sometimes, they should be reminded that becoming

rich is not the only purpo of life.

If one spends all his life pursuing nothing but money, he might live in a big

hou and drive a luxury car when he gets old. However, a person's material

need is within limits. One cannot live in two hous and drive two cars at the

same time. Neither should one take in two persons' amount of food. Besides,

people's desire and ambition to make money could be infinite. More of money

doesn't always make us happier. More of Money tends to make us ud to that

money and desirous of having even more of that.

Therefore, we should look around and find other goals of life. For example,

one can live a meaningful life by discovering his gift and making the best of it.

One can also live a happy life by making more friends and building a joyful

family.

An online survey conducted by the China Youth Daily shows that most young

people (66.6%) want to be a leader, whether they rve in private companies or

public ctions* Only 4.8% say they are not interested in being a leader. This is

especially comnionplace among people bom ia the 70s and 80s.

Some people say it is a good phenomenon that the young want to be leaders.

After all, it shows that the young have great ambitions which will inspire them to

work hard. Others, however, think otherwi. They argue that it only reveals so

many young people are chasing fame 如d fortune, a sign that is bad for the

healthy development of the young and the whole society.

Peisonallyj I believe the saying ICHe who doesn’t want to be a general isn’t

a good soldier' And, it’s encouraging that we still have many young people who

ek power from a mere view of the good of the people. So, I dcm^t think it

anything wrong for the young desiring to have a position in the lead as long as

they don’t eye it as a shortcut to fame and fortune.

Publications Should Be Censored .What's Your Opinion?

Suppo you are in the position of a parent. Would you allow your

children to read any book or e any film they wanted to without first

checking its content or finding out whether it is suitable for them? If

your answer to the question is "yes," then you are either extremely pe

rmissive or just plain irresponsible. If your answer is "no ," then you

are exercising your right as a parent to protect your children from

what you consider to be undesirable influences. In other words, by

acting as a censor yourlf, you are admitting that there is a strong

ca for censorship.

Perhaps you will say that children need protection and it is the

parents'responsibility to provide it. But with adults, it is another thing.

Of cour many adults can decide what is good and what is bad, but

not all of them can do so. Censorship is for the good of society as a

whole. Just imagine what chaos there would be if we lived in a society

without laws! Like the law, censorship contributes to the common

good.

Moreover, when discussing censorship, we should not confine our

attention to great masterpieces of genuine art, but should consider

the vast numbers of publications and films which make up the bulk of

the entertainment industry. When censorship laws are relaxed,

unscrupulous people are given a licence to produce virtually anything

in the name of "art", but actually are very far from being work s of art.

There is a tendency to equate "artistic" with "pornographic". The vast

market for pornography would rapidly be exploited. One of the great

things that censorship does is to prevent certain people from making

fat profits by corrupting the minds of others.

If you smoke and still don't believe that there is a definite link between smoking

and bronchial troubles, heart dia, and lung cancer, then you are certainly

deceiving yourlf. Whenever the subject of smoking and health is raid, the

governments of most countries hear no evil, e no evil and smell no evil. In

Britain, for instance, cigarette advertising has been banned on TV. The

conscience of the nation is appead while the population continues to puff its

way to smoky, cancerous death.

If the governments of the world were honestly concerned about the welfare of

their peoples, you'd think they'd conduct aggressive anti-smoking campaigns.

Far from it! The tobacco industry is allowed to spend huge sums on advertising.

The advertiments suggest it is manly to smoke, even positively healthy!

Smoking is as sociated with the great open-air life, with beautiful girls, true love

and togetherness.

So I suggest that governments begin by banning all cigarette and tobacco

advertising and then conduct anti-smoking adve rtising campaigns of their own.

Smoking should be banned in all public areas like theatres, cinemas and

restaurants. Great efforts should be made to inform young people especially of

the dire conquences of taking up the habit. A horrific warning — say, a picture

of a death's head — should be included in every packet of cigarettes that is sold.

As individuals we are certainly weak, but if governments acted honestly and

courageously, they could protect us from ourlves.

One of the much-talked-about prent-day social problems is juvenile

delinquency, and its rate of frequency is emingly on the ri.

It is reported in newspapers that the delinquents range in age from 12 to 18.

Only a small portion have committed rious crimes like kidnapping and

murdering. Tho cas are handled through the court system. Most of the

delinquencies fall into four categories: brawling, including gang fighting with

deadly weapons; theft, mostly petty, xually promiscuous behaviour and

addiction to drugs. The delinquents are generally placed under temporary

supervision by neighbourhood committees, work units or reform schools.

The caus of juvenile delinquency are varied. Through media we often come

across the following cas:

Ill-treatment to teenagers by their step-fathers or stepmothers often lead to

family tragedies. School pupil delinquents, being not properly cared for, have

chronic behaviour problems. Their parents are too busy either with business or

with gambling. Still, there are cas resulted from parents' or grandparents'

indulgence to their darlings. Petty theft once or twice is not punished but

encouraged. Gradually the petty thieves grow addicted to stealing .

Adolescents tried drugs mostly out of curiosity before they finally became

habitual drug-takers.

Not a few examples can be found around us in our daily life. Limited by time and

space, I have to skip them over. However, juvenile delinquency, being a rious

social problem concerning the young generation, certainly derves special

attention. I think of all the things we can do, the most fundamental one is

deepening and strengthening education so as to ultimately save the young.

Should young people always respect and obey tho older than themlves in all

circumstances? In my opinion, respect and obedience do not necessarily go

hand in hand all the time.

In my context, people who are older than me should be my parents, older

siblings, teachers, relatives and others, who started life earlier than I and have

en the coming and going of generations and are therefore much more

experienced. In view of their niority in age and rich experiences, they do

derve our respect.

Responding our niors is the basic expression of politeness, such as greeting

them, helping them do anything within our capacity and eking advice from

them in making decisions in life. Such respon from us is an expression of love,

too. The niors, being assured of our sincerity, will be most happy and

contented.

However, whether you ng people should always obey the niors remains

controversial. Before responding, I think it is helpful to ask: is the advice or

desire given morally right? Is it encouraging me to act against my own will? Is it

given bad on prejudices? I am convinced that young people should not simply

obey without thinking, becau blind obedience only confirms how immature,

impulsive and naive we are.

To conclude, it is necessary to respect the niors, however, to obey them at all

times is questionable. As goes the saying "think before you act," I am sure that

every mature youth will discern what is right and what is wrong before r

esponding wily.

From the cartoon given above, we can obrve that there are two people

watching Peking Opera. With the actress performing vividly on the stage, the old

man is watching attentively. However, the little boy sitting beside does not even

cast a glance at the actress and falls sleepy. It is obvious that he shows no

interest in Peking Opera.

The cartoon reflects an interesting and usual respect of daily life. However,

from a deeper perspectives, it also reveals the gradual loss of traditional culture

in modern society. What exactly contribute to this phenomenon ? Possible

reasons could be listed as follows: for one thing, quite a few people, especially

youngsters, hold that Chine traditional culture is out-dated and of little u in

modern society. Perhaps, from their perspective, traditional culture form the

distant past can hardly adapt to or keep pace with the ever-changing new world.

Moreover, exotic cultures, to some extent, have also pod a great challenge to

the traditional culture of China. As we can e, a large body of people have been

attracted by foreign cultures which feature diversity, novelty and richness

—Crazy fans of foreign TV programs, electronic products or even ways of life

abound in our daily life.

However, no one can deny the significance of Chine traditional culture. It

is the crystallization of Chine wisdom and civilization. An individual or nation

showing no respect to the esnce of traditional culture cannot be expected to

develop and be stronger. Hence, something could and should be done to rever

the inexorable (不可阻擋的，不可修改的）decline in the emphasis of Chine

traditional culture.

In the current climate of rising college fees and tight job market, the functions

of higher education is arousing public concern. Having a degree or not ems

not to make any difference to our life and may not necessarily guarantee a good

job and income.

Students who attend higher education obtain a wide range of personal,

financial and other lifelong benefits. First of all, the whole experiences of

university life including all the academic lectures and social practices forge （形成，締造）our personality and cultivate such virtues as cooperativeness and

openness. In addition, according to the statistics, there is a trendy correlation

between higher level of education and higher earnings despite the fierce job

hunting competition. University is a huge advantage if we need to acquire

experti to practice in a meaningful profession.

In my opinion, it would be wi to attend university. Having a decent degree

and being broadly intelligent may not guarantee us success, but it makes us a

candidate.

Graduate Craze

A growing number of college students and even people from all walks of life

take part in the National Graduate Entrance Examination nowadays. According

to an official statistics, in the year 2011 alone, there were more than 1.4 million

applicants sitting for the exam. It ems to be a craze for postgraduate study.

People have different purpos in trying to go to the graduate school. First,

the majority of candidates try to get into graduate school due to the

employment pressure, as a bachelor’s degree is no longer evaluated as a

sufficient qualification to ensure a decent job nowadays. Second, some people,

though employed for years, find their knowledge inadequate to meet the

demand of this ever-developing society. Naturally, they turn to postgraduate

study. Third, some people e postgraduate study as a fashion and follow suit.

In my opinion, it is advisable to pursue postgraduate study under the

prent condition of low Employment rate and high demands on talents. And I

have every reason to believe that more people will struggle to study in the

graduate school and the craze for graduate study will last for years.

Sinology

In recent years, Sinology, the study of Chine traditional culture, literature,

history, society etc, has become increasingly popular. For instance, it is reported

that many primary and condary schools have t up cours of sinology, in

which students are taught classical works by Chine ancient educators and

philosophers, like Confucius- Another good illustration is in the program CCTV

Lecture Room famous scholars, e.g, Yu Dan, give lectures on Chine ancient

philosophies and literature。

Sinology becomes prevalent due to the fact that it is of vital significance for

both the individuals and the society. For one thing, Sinology is the esnce of

Chine civilization with more than 5,000 years. Thus, for individuals, they can

enlarge their scope of knowledge, enrich their experience and adapt themlves

to the complicated society. For another, it is acknowledged that the

rehabilitation of Sinology can contribute to the establishment of a harmonious

society.

In my opinion, all Chine people should inherit the merits of Sinology. To do

so, we can read books by ourlves or to attend lectures on this issue. Besides,

we have the obligation to popularize introducing it to the world. By doing so, we

can not only inherit it but also make it glorious and prosperous.

what is leadership?its qualities are difficult to define. but they are not so

difficult to identify. leaders don't force other people to go along with them. they

bring them along.

leaders get commitment from others by giving it themlves, by building an

environment that encourages creativity, and by operating with honesty and

fairness.

good leaders aren’t "lone rangers. "they recognize that an organization＇ s

strategies for success require the combined talents and efforts of many people.

leadership is the catalyst for transforming tho talents into results.

successful leaders are emotionally and intellectually oriented to the

future--not wedded to(執著于）the past. they have a hunger to take responsibility,

to innovate, and to initiate. they are not content with merely taking care of

what＇ s already there. they want to move forward to creating something new.

leaders provide answers as well as direction, offer strengthen as well as

dedication, and speak from experience as well as understanding of the problems

they face and the people they work with.

leaders are flexible rather than dogmatic. they believe in unity rather than

yielding. and they strive to achieve agreements out of conflict. leadership is all

about getting people consistently to give their best, helping them to grow to

their fullest potential, and motivating them to work toward a common good.

leaders make the right things happen when they＇re suppod to.

a good leader, an effective leader, is one who has respect. respect is

something you have to have in order to get.a leader who has respect for other

people at all levels of an organization, for the work they do, and for their abilities,

desires and needs, will find that respect is returned. and all concerned will be

motivated to work together.

On a Harmonious Dormitory Life

Dormitory life is an indispensable part of college life. But sometimes the

harmony in the dormitory be disturbed in one way or another.

As is known to all, a harmonious dormitory life is important to college

students and benefits all the members. On one hand, we can have a good rest

and put our heart into study. On the other hand, we will have a good mood and

enjoy being together.

There are veral ways to create and maintain a harmonious dormitory life.

Firstly, you have to evaluate your life-style and try to get rid of your dirty habits,

if there are any. Secondly, when an annoying situation aris, you'll just have to

learn to tolerate each other and co-exist. Thirdly, you'll have to share with each

other and make good friends.

In conclusion, we should try our best to build a harmonious dormitory life for

the sake of good study and good life.

Recently a blind date(相親） including 20 young men and women has been held

by an organization. Some people e it as a good way to meet different people

while others argue that it’s not possible to find one’s partner between two

people who have not previously met. As far as I’m concerned, blind dating is

worth trying and you can find your true love there!

First of all, nowadays many young people are always busying with their

work; therefore they have little spare time to meet with their future partner,

leading to more and more leftover women and men. According to a study, a

happy life includes work and family balance, which means a harmonious family

including the couple (and the baby in the future) may contribute to a

comparably happy life.

What’s more, during a blind date, usually the basic information is given to

both parts; therefore it’s more reliable to know a person’s family background,

his or her job, religion etc. As is known to all, a couple should have the same

belief in value, wealth, thus preventing many potential conflicts.

Last but not least, through blind dates, one can meet people with different

personalities, thus having a clearer idea about which kind of person is suitable

for being a lifelong mate. And blind dates are also great chances to make friends

in the same age group.

To sum up, blind dating can be a good way to find one’s future husband or

wife. It’s feasible and reliable. Hope that everyone can
