高三上學期9月基礎測試英語讀后續寫:
閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構成一篇完
整的短文.
Looking over the top of the book, I glanced across at the new girl named
Rochelle. She only joined our class at the beginning of the week. It must be
hard starting a new school in the middle of the year.
At last, the bell went for the end of the day. I spotted Rochelle running towards
a tall woman who must be her mum. Then I saw a surprising thing. Rochelle's
mum was waving her arms round and making shapes with her fingers, and
Rochelle was doing the same with hers. It was like they were talking to each
other with their hands. Oh, could her mother be deaf? My mind was filled with
questions.
The next day, I was reading this week's words when I felt a tap(輕拍) on my
shoulder. I looked up and Rochelle was standing in front of me. “Shall we test
each other?” she asked, pointing to my spelling book.
“Yes, of cour," I replied. But I was still wondering how to ask the questions
that had been tumbling(翻騰) around in my head since yesterday.
“So, um, that hand thing you did with ”“Signing.”
“Yeah, signing. Is it becau she’s, um. deaf?”
“Yes, both my parents are deaf, so 1 communicate with them through sign.”
“Oh, I'm sorry. That must be really difficult.” I could tell by the frown on
Rochelle's face that I'd said something wrong, but 1 didn't know what. “So, did
your parents need someone to help them look after you when you were a baby?”
“Of cour not,” Rochelle got annoyed. “Why would being deaf mean they
can't look after me? Being deaf doesn't mean they're stupid,” she was almost
shouting. “In fact, they're much cleverer than most people I know.” Hearing
that, I got hot all over. I didn't say her parents were stupid. But before I could
explain, the bell went and she strode(闊步行走) out of the classroom. I hurried
after her, but when I tried to speak to her, she kept her back to me as if I were
her enemy.

to understand the sign language, I felt as if she was expressing her anger and
depression. However, I was about to express my apology when her mother’s
movement astounded me. Instead of the annoyed Rochelle, her mother stroked
Rochelle’s head with a big smile, nodding to emingly encourage her to do
something.
P1. All of a sudden, Rochelle was coming over to me, with her eyes watery and red.
“My mom said I wasn’t suppod to be annoyed with you!” She outstreched
her hands toward me. To my surpri, she added the reassurance from her
mother, “It’s not esntial to be nsitive to any mis-understanding.” Feeling
more guilty, I apologized for my reckless comments and began to understand
her reaction in defen of her mom. What she was looking forward to was that a
deaf man could be treated normally. At the moment, I embraced her tightly. If
only I hadn’t talked that to her. We knocked the rust off our friendship and I was
impresd by the lesson that we should get rid of the stereotype and never judge
a book by its cover.

getting annoyed at you.”Before I could say a word, Rochelle opened up and
made an apology to me, which made me more ashamed I apologized,“Rachelle,
it was wrong of me to make such assumptions about your parents. I didn't mean
that. I'm really sorry if I hurt your feelings.”Rochelle managed a smile,
explaining the reason why she got
so defensive was that people always misunderstood her parents and
assumed that they couldn't do things just becau they were g that, I
gave Rochelle a big hug and of cour, I learned a valuable lesson - never judge

lifeline to anchor her wavering soul. In that moment of connection, our worlds
collided, intertwining like the branches of an ancient tree, finding solace in the
refuge of each other's company.
